Celebrating 100 Years of Musical Excellence: 1915 – 2015

The Kansas City Music Teachers Association was organized January 10, 1915. At that time, music was not a regular part of the public school curriculum. The early members of KCMTA strived and succeeded in helping make music a possible part of every child’s life by educating legislators and Parent –Teacher organizations about the need for the arts alongside science, math, and literature for a complete well-rounded human experience.  High School credits were given for applied music and standardization of applied music curriculum paved the way for later availability of music and the arts in public schools K-12. KCMTA also played a major part in helping establish Kansas City as a center for the arts through educating audiences and professional concert programs.

Today, our KCMTA members are private, public, and collegiate teachers who proudly continue the traditions established by our pioneer founders in supporting our students through an array of programs, our community by enhancing arts awareness, and our teachers by offering continuing educational opportunities.

In 2015, KCMTA celebrated 100 years of music-making in Kansas City by hosting special events for students, teachers and the community.
